A friend of mine gave me a bottle of this wine a few weeks ago. It is not top wine but it had improved in the bottle. It went down very well with some roast lamb and had the typical taste of a red Rioja. It had hints of vanilla from the oak barrels. The tannin had softened nicely. The wine was ready to drink.
It pays to keep lots of red wines for a few years before drinking and most red wine will improve with bottle age even cheap ones.
The same cannot be said for some white wines. It is best to drink Picpoul de Pinet from the south of France as soon as you can after bottling. Some of this wine can be of good quality but it is much better young and drunk with fish.
The same can be said of Fino and Manzanilla Sherry you should drink the youngest wine you can find, cool them and drink with tapas or fish. Some of these types of sherry are of very high quality but do not keep them for any length of time even in a cellar.
